Meditation on the meaning of death for mezzo-soprano with viola or clarinet
Mezzo soprano and viola or clarinet in A
Text: D.H. Lawrence
The song cycle ‘Last Poems’ has three songs on death and dying by D.H. Lawrence who was terminally ill when he wrote them. The poems are affirmations of our strength, frailties and humanity.
Shadows goes into a person’s search knowing they are terminally ill. Becky’s music is questioning, broken and ultimately, hopeful. It is replete with nature as symbolism for our changing phases of life.
Written for viola and low voice in 1990 (clarinet and voice in 1994) this 5-minute piece is suitable for advanced professional musicians.
