Wing to the mallee with evocative SATB choral and bird songs for woodwind solo
SATB choir, piano, clarinet in A or soprano saxophone
Text: Flexmore Hudson
Mallee farm at dusk takes the listener to melancholy and awe of Australian bush sunsets, birdsong, horses and the memories of the day. The text, by Jindyworobak poet Flexmore Hudson, portrays an insider’s knowing of the mallee, as he taught there for many years. The musicality of his imagery anchors the song in true lived experience.
Written in 1993, Becky’s timeless study of birdsong is 3 minutes long and is suitable for a good community choir with accompanist with an advanced woodwind player as soloist. It was commissioned by Russell Larkin for the Adelaide Chorus.
It has been performed internationally bringing the bush to the world. It can be part of the larger suite, ‘The Mallee Sings’ or as a separate choral work.
