Marimba solo from Australian nature
Bass marimba and medium soft heads
Andy Goldsworthy is a UK sculptor who visited arid-land South Australia and showed us its beauty at the 1992 Adelaide Festival through wonderful sculptures of sticks and stones. Becky has written a three-movement suite for percussion inspired by this art from nature: Sticks and Stones: after Andy Goldsworthy.
The first piece – I – Song Ball, is based on his huge ball of interwoven mallee sticks. Becky uses this inspiration and weaves melodies in and out like that of the huge wooden sculpture. She was captivated by the idea of music using sticks on sticks could parallel the visual art.
Written in 1993 and revised in 2004, this 2-minute work is suitable for advanced or professional percussionists. It was commissioned by Ryszard Pusz in 1993.
