from ‘Desert Songs’: Aztec Princess

Mezzo-soprano and piano duet with reflections on mothers and daughters

Mezzo soprano and piano accompaniment

Text: Pat Mora

Deceptively simple yet resonant poetry by Pat Mora explores womanhood and identity. Becky set three of her poems about women for mezzo-soprano and piano in the song cycle: ‘Desert Songs’ written between 1992-1995.

Aztec Princess, a haunting 3-minute song, is second in the series. It was written in 1994 and reflects on the cycles of mother-daughter relationships, the pull for independence and the need for love. It is suitable for advanced singers and pianists.
